The Misfits Songbook

The Misfits Songbook
By Pappy

The Misfits Songbook is pretty much the coolest thing on the entire Internet.

What is the Misfits songbook?  It is a definitive user-generated tab/chord transcription collection, available for free, and documenting every Misfits song ever released (or REALLY close to it).  No one has asked him to take down the website, no one has complained about copyrights or any of that other BS.  I'm pretty sure even the band is aware of its existence and they seem pretty cool with it too.

So you can see how, even if you don't like the Misfits, that this may be the coolest thing on the entire Internet.  This is one example where something cool was made and no one threw a fit and, as a result, it's still available today.

It's awesome.

If I were in a band, I wouldn't even rely on the community to generate the content!  I would post the chords myself, and maybe the first few notes of the solo in TAB so people would know which box I'm playing in (because I'd probably be playing in a box).

Why would I want everyone to have access to the material, letting them copy or cover my stuff?  You mean why wouldn't I want advocates constantly playing my songs are guitar stores, to friends and family, and possibly at gigs of their own, inspiring people to ask what THAT was and having my band name passed out more?

Is that what you mean?

All the time you hear that you need to get your name out there, to get as many fans as possible, to grow as much as possible.  This seems like a SUPER easy way to do that!  What guitarist wouldn't appreciate a band giving them this information, making it easy for them to learn their favorite songs?  What band wouldn't like guitarists out there acting as missionaries for their band?

I tell you, the secrecy makes no sense to me.  Holding out for expensive books that few people buy makes no sense to me.  Everyone is looking online for the information anyway, so why not take out the middleman(men) who are making WRONG transcriptions, make your own, even if they are just basic chords, and put them out yourself!  You'll get more traffic to your site, you'll get more fans - happier fans - and you'll get your songs out there being played with at least the right chords!

As far as no-brainers go, this is a pretty big one.

Every band needs to have a Misfits Songbook mentality.

Mod Kits DIY achieved what I believed to be the impossible: They made me confident that I could build anything provided I had a kit with all the correct parts and a great set of instructions. After butchering an amp kit from another company and spending far more than you should be able to justify for a home-built 5 watt amp only to have it fail twice for different reasons, then get taken to a tech only to come back sounding awful, I thought I was done with building.

Mod Kits DIY sent me a boost to build though and it came out wonderfully. A little ugly on the inside but that's just my inexperience showing. They're also incredibly affordable. Check out my review here.

Hey man,

I've been following for a while...huge Misfits fan and I have a question I felt was too dumb to ask but I'm gonna shoot now and who knows.

A friend of mine first recommended the Fifth Street for wisdom on painless electric guitar recording...so finally my burning question is:

What first couple steps would you take in recording electric guitar on a PC - to an existing mp3 drum loop?

I have watched a million tutorials after 8 years of guitar playing and I'm embarrassed to say I've composed drum loops on various programs and recorded electric guitar alone - but I have no idea how to line the two up!

Any programs you recommend? Other guitarists who might be familiar with this?

Thanks a ton. And even if you don't have time to answer, props for the Misfits question!
